SHAKESPEARE INTER-SCHOOLS QUIZ (article first published : 2007-01-1)

The 2007 Brush-Up Your Shakespeare Inter-Schools Quiz Challenge is presented by the National Creative Arts Youth Festival. Now in its 17th year, it is annually the showcase for the achievements of the youth of South Africa.

The Brush-Up Your Shakespeare Inter-School Quiz Challenge is an ongoing activity which aims to furnish young people with a clear and dynamic understanding of the values that underpin civilisation, because these values determine the integrity of the individual’s choice of action for which he/she is ultimately, solely responsible.

Educationally speaking, the NCAYF believes that no-one should be deprived of the experience of Shakespeare’s interpretation of human actions and the underlying motivation that determines choice, because it provides one with an insight into a world forever widening on one’s view. As such it is a freeing process, freeing one from arrogance, prejudice, hypocrisy self-importance, intolerance and meanness of spirit.

The Competition is conducted over three rounds. The Preliminary Round in which all participating schools are required to answer a written questionnaire takes place on February 28. The Second Round in which the eight top schools participate in a series of public quiz programmes with teams competing against each other will be presented at Durban Girls' College, Durban on May 13 and 20 respectively.

More information and entry forms from Selma Botha of the National Creative Arts Youth Festival on 031 2019312 or 083 952 5714 or fax 086 672 5497.
