AGNES OF GOD (article first published : 2000-08-6)

Last year, Emma Allen, Jane Fisher and Olivia Borgen appeared at Kwasuka in The Sound Of Muesli, Greg Kingís hilarious send-up of the well-known musical The Sound of Music which enjoyed sell-out seasons in Pietermaritzburg and at last yearís festivals in Grahamstown and Hilton.

All senior students at the University of Natalís drama studies department in Pietermaritzburg, they will again don nunís outfits for a very different production - John Pielmeierís passionate psychological drama, Agnes Of God. The play is to be directed by Greg King, founder of the KickstArt theatre company and director of its first production, the multi-Vita-Award winning Popcorn which also appeared at Kwasuka. Agnes of God is produced by KickstArt in association with the Hexagon Theatre in Pietermaritzburg.

When a naive young nun is accused of strangling her new-born baby, court psychiatrist, Dr Martha Livingstone is sent to determine whether the girl is legally sane. But the conventís worldly Mother Superior believes that the girl is blessed rather than disturbed and should be protected from any kind of cross-examination. She becomes determined to stand in the way of the answers Dr Livingstone is so desperately seeking.

Within this controversial scenario, John Pielmeierís play explores the precarious balance between humankindís need for faith and spiritual mystery and its equal desire to rationalise, understand and explain the universe in which it lives. This project furthers KickstArtís mission to produce quality productions of internationally acclaimed plays for audiences in KZN and create opportunities for young local talent to explore and perform exciting dramatic roles without having to leave Durban.

Agnes Of God runs at the Kwasuka Theatre from August 8 to 11 at 19h30 and on August 12 at 18h30. It has a further run at the Hexagon Theatre in Pietermaritzburg from August 15 to 19 at 19h30. Tickets R25 (R20 students and pensioners). Book at the theatres: Kwasuka on (031) 309-2236 or the Hexagon on (033) 260-5537.
