NOT QUITE BILLY (article first published : 2006-11-29)

Not Quite Billy is a tribute to Scottish stand-up comedian Billy Connolly. This is a showcase of the very best of Billy Connolly’s decades-spanning career. It’s a show for the fans of the “Big Yin” who never get to see the master comedian himself often enough. And an introduction for those people who have never had the opportunity to experience the very high energy comedy of the man who gave birth to what is now known as “alternative” comedy.

Local Durban boy and now Cape Town stand-up comedian, Mark Palmer, is the body and voice of Not Quite Billy. From the side-splitting stories that had everyone from welders to grandmothers clutching their stomachs in delight, to the colourful and wild wardrobes and wacky hairstyles, Mark captures the intensity and spirit of the comedian himself in this hour-long tribute.

“Billy Connolly is the inspiration behind my decision to becoming a stand-up comedian,” says Mark Palmer. “I feel that it is only fitting that I honour the man who was such a huge influence on my own career by allowing others the opportunity to experience the brilliance of the man himself with this tribute show.”

True fans of Billy Connolly who have followed his career will recognise the very best moments of the man himself, if in a somewhat slightly different, “Not Quite Billy” way.

Not Quite Billy runs at Kwasuka Theatre from Tuesdays to Saturdays at December 8 to 23 at 20h00 (Sundays at 18h00). Tickets R60 with “Buy one get one free” promotions on December 8, 9 and 10. (Half price for pensioners and students)
