TO HOUSE (article first published : 2006-10-23)

Playwright Ashwin Singh hits bull’s eye with his distinctive, original theatre piece, To House, presented by the Playhouse Company. Clearly defined characters and crisp dialogue combine to create fast-moving and exciting interplay between two men – Jason and Sibusiso – who live in the same sectional title complex. This physical interplay underlining the play’s title, “to house” as in “to accommodate, to secure, to protect.”

While Jason’s fortunes are on the decline, Sibusiso’s are on the increase and some of Sibusiso’s projects are those which Jason believes should rightfully be his. The play is not about race issues but rather about choices. The choices offered in life and love to individuals that can favourably - or unfavourably - shape their future. In the end, whether they like it or not, they must live with their choices.

The two protagonists are played by Thomie Holtzhausen and Arifani Moyo. Others in the cast are Pranesh Maharaj. Shika Budhoo and Santhiran Munsamy.

To House runs in the Playhouse Drama from November 24 to December 2. Pre-booked tickets R35 and R40 (R40 and R50 bought an hour before the performance). Booking is at Computicket.

All members of the cast can be heard in Ashwin Singh’s “GrandAsia Lodge” on Lotus FM’s late night drama serial at 21h30 from early December.
