GRANDPA GRUMP & HIS MAGICAL JUNK SHOP (article first published : 2006-09-23)

Once again the Catalina Theatre presents traditional holiday fare for younger audiences with Bryan Hiles appearing in Neil Coppenís Grandpa Grump and his Magical Junk Shop at the Catalina Theatre.

This delightful participative production is suitable for youngsters under the age of 10 years and was one of the highlights of the MUSHO! Theatre Festival in January. Bryan Hiles provides delicious entertainment as he transforms and recycles a variety of junk into magical characters as he attempts to free a young girl.

Grandpa Grump is a crotchety old junkshop owner who keeps losing things. It is his grandaughterís birthday and he canít find Molly the missing rag doll. Join him on his quest to find Molly, meet many colourful characters, help him defeat Boo the ferocious broomstick dragon and help him find his spectacles, false teeth and most importantly, his imagination.

Bryan Hiles is a Durban based actor with strong experience in many aspects of theatre. His experience in childrenís theatre goes back to 1996 when he toured with the Story Spinning Theatre. He has done puppetry with the AREPP educational trust and joined Peter Court and Clare Mortimer to produce the beautiful Legend of Icarus.

Based in Johannesburg for a period, he stretched his vocal chords in several musical shows and appeared on camera with Marc Lottering in Whatís Bothering Marc Lottering. He has performed Shakespearean plays such as Hamlet, Othello and Macbeth as well as the original works Pillow Talk, The Mutlix (which he wrote) and S.O.S.S. He has been involved in the last two postage-stamp pantomimes at the Kwasuka Theatre: Cinderella and Snow White.

Grandpa Grump is written by Neil Coppen and runs every morning at 11h00 from September 23 until October 1. The duration is approximately one hour. Tickets R40 include a boat ride around Durban Harbour. Book online at www.strictlytickets.co.za or at www.catalinatheatre.co.za or at www.goingplaces.co.za or on 082 553 5903.
