THE CRUCIBLE (article first published : 2006-09-5)

The University of KwaZulu-Natal Drama and Performance Studies in association with Possible Productions will present the Arthur Miller classic, The Crucible.

Arthur Miller’s play is one of the key texts of 20th century drama and all theatre goers should take advantage of the rare opportunity to see this extraordinary work of mass hysteria, despair and redemption performed live. Although set in the 1600s, The Crucible is still – and frighteningly - particularly accessible and relevant to today’s current context, reminding us of the dangers of fearing that which we don’t understand.

To use the playwright’s own words: “By whatever means it is accomplished, the prime business of a play is to arouse the passions of its audience so that by the route of passion may be opened up a new relationship between a man and men, and between men and Man. Drama is akin to the other invention of man in that it ought to help us know more, and not merely to spend our feelings.” (Arthur Miller, from the Introduction of his Collected Plays)

Directed by Tamar Meskin Arthur Miller’s The Crucible will be performed by Honours Acting students of the Drama and Performance programme. It promises to be a provocative, not to be missed, piece of theatre.

Performances take place from September 9 to 12 at 19h00 in the Square Space Theatre on the Howard College Campus, University of KwaZulu-Natal. Limited seating available!

Tickets R10 booked through Claudette Wagner (between 08h30 and 15h30 weekdays) on 031 260 3133, fax 031 260 1410 or email: wagnerc1@ukzn.ac.za
