TRIBUTE TO ROB AMATO (article first published : 2006-08-20)

Robert "Rob" Amato was killed last month in Johannesburg when he was involved in a vehicle collision.

Well-known as the legal columnist of The Sunday Independent and for his work in protest theatre in the Eastern Cape and Cape Town in the late 70s and 80s, Rob Amato studied politics and English literature at the University of Natal (now University of KwaZulu-Natal) to which institution he later returned to teach English literature and theatre studies.

He went on to become a Rhodes Scholar and later studied at Oxford University in the UK. His passion for protest theatre led him to become one of the founders of the famed Space Theatre in Cape Town.
