ACT AWARDS 2006 (article first published : 2006-08-8)

Nominations are open for The Arts & Culture Trust (ACT) Awards 2006 presented in association with Nedbank and CLASSICfeel Magazine. Now in its eighth year, the Annual ACT Awards is an established event on the arts and culture calendar and recognises outstanding contributions by individuals, organisations and agencies that support, sustain, promote and develop artistic creativity.

The idea behind the ACT Awards is to identify individuals, organisations and agencies who have contributed to education and training in the arts; created new audiences and markets for the arts; enhanced the quality of artistic productions through criticism; managed the arts efficiently; linked the arts to durable social and economic development; and devoted their lives to making the arts accessible to all South Africans.

Previous winners have included amongst others, Sandile Mamela, Michelle Constant, Bridget van Oerle and Lynette Marais as well as arts and culture projects like the Baxter Theatre Centre's Ikhwezi Community Theatre Festival, Buskaid and Artslink amongst other. ACT Lifetime Achievers have included Gibson Kente, Es'kia Mphalele, Sylvia Glasser and Sophie Mgcina who sadly passed away shortly after winning the award last year.

Nominations for the awards are now open and the public are invited to submit nominations in the following categories:

The ACT Administrator Award 2006 for an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the administration of arts and culture.

The ACT Journalist Award 2006 for a journalist who regularly writes with excellence about the arts and culture.

The ACT Media Award 2006 for an electronic or a print publication that reports on arts and culture; or a South African radio or television programme which reports on arts and culture.

The ACT Publicist Award 2006 for a media publicity company or agency which generates significant publicity for the arts by way of outstanding marketing initiatives.

The ACT Cultural Development Project Award 2006 for a project or programme concerned with community development in arts and culture.

The ACT Arts Education Project Award 2006 for an individual, programme or institution involved in arts, culture and heritage education in the formal or informal sectors.

The Most Successful ACT-funded project Award 2006 for a project funded by ACT which has delivered best against the strategic objectives of their grant.

The ACT Lifetime Achievement Award 2006 will be awarded by the ACT Board of Trustees.

Nomination forms including details of categories and criteria will be available in the August issue of CLASSICfeel Magazine and at their website www.classicfeel.co.za, via the Nedbank website at www.nedbankarts.co.za and the ACT website at www.act.org.za

ACT is supported by the following Founding Trustees: The Department of Arts and Culture, Nedbank, The Royal Netherlands Embassy, Sun International and The Vodacom Foundation. For more information call the ACT office on 011 802 7646 or send an e-mail to info@act.org.za
