CHEAPER COPENHAGEN (article first published : 2000-07-23)

For the cash-strapped, there will be a budget preview of the world class drama Copenhagen on July 25 at 19h30. Entry will be on a Pay-What-You-Can basis. There will be a Pay-What-You-Can donation box on the box-office counter and patrons are expected to make a donation towards the cost of the ticket.

A thought-provoking, articulate and witty play, Copenhagen is mainly about people and their relationships but it is also a dramatic study of some of the issues that lay behind the discovery of the atomic bomb. (See story on Drama pages)

In the words of producer / director Maurice Podbrey: "The effect on first reading Copenhagen was electrifying. I immediately wrote off to Michael Frayn's London agent saying that not since Nelson Mandela walked out onto that rugby field, had I had such a visceral experience - hopefully this played some part in getting the South African rights.

"In Copenhagen, Frayn has tackled subjects of some complexity and sophistication. They are also issues central to the history of the 20th century. He has done so with out condescension and that he has also achieved such popular success with this play, is certainly encouraging to all of us working in the theatre."

The play is being presented in the round at the Square Space Theatre. This is alongside the Open Air Theatre on the University of Natal Campus. Entry is through the main gates at the University with parking opposite the Howard College.
