TOKOLOSHE COME & GO! (article first published : 2006-07-29)

Magner and Jacobus van Heerden) bring their fun and quirky tales of Africa in Tokoloshe Come and Go! to the Catalina Theatre.

Liam Magner and Jacobus van Heerden present an hour of wacky, African story-telling madness as they take audiences on a trip through the mighty umZimkulu village! The actors jointly received last year’s Durban Theatre Awards for best New Actors and Best New South African Script.

Physical theatre meets Monty Python in a highly entertaining display of music, muscle, mayhem and a touch of “Chatsworth Street fighting”. Be prepared to meet over eight characters ranging from the sexy to the insane in this tale of bravery, betrayal, love and Britney Spears.

The Neon Anthems have been performing together for the last six years, starting in high school when they discovered a passion for both music and theatre. With these strong interests they were soon creating their own comic sketches and songs, which always confronted the South African reality.

Be what it may, the ridiculously funny stories told by Magner and van Heerden, come from a personal place. Their purpose is to express the material which interests and matters to them, without ever forgetting to take the mickey out of each other.

Tokoloshe Come and Go! runs at Catalina Theatre at Wilson’s Wharf from August 1 to 13 with performances Tuesday to Saturday at 20h00 (Sunday at 18h00). Tickets R60 (Two for the Price of One for students and scholars). The concession of Buy one Get One Free runs for the first week from August 1 to 6. To book phone Thandeka on 031 305 6889.

The Neon Anthems will be at the Hilton Arts Festival in September.
