THE ART OF CHARF (article first published : 2006-07-22)

Paul Slabolepszy's delightful comedy, The Art of Charf, will have a brief stopover in Pietermaritzburg on its national tour, after another successful season at the Grahamstown festival before heading to Cape Town. The Art of Charf has received rave reviews wherever it has been performed and was the hit of last year's Witness Hilton Arts Festival.

Written by Paul Slabolepszy and directed by Bobby Heaney, this collaboration of the cream of South African Theatre sees performances by the formidable husband and wife team of Elize Cawood and Wilson Dunster.

Gloria, an Afrikaans “Agony Aunt” for local women's magazines also runs a computer dating service (Lady Lonely Hearts). With the advent of the Internet, her dating service has become obsolete, so she decides to call it a day. As she packs up the tiny office that has been home to Lady Lonely Hearts, she is visited by a retired plumber, Cedric, and in search of “the perfect partner”, this client from hell nearly drives Gloria mad. The play combines roll-in-the-aisle humour with heart-breaking pathos.

The Art of Charf runs in the Hexagon Theatre on the campus of the University of KwaZulu Natal Pietermaritzburg from August 2 to 5 at 19h30. Tickets R60 (R50 students and senior citizens). Bookings on 033 260 5537 or e-mail hexagon@ukzn.ac.za
