SARAFINA! IN TOP TEN (article first published : 2006-06-24)

The vibrant musical motion picture, Sarafina! which was released on June 15 is one of South Africa’s Top Ten films in release, grossing R213,646 in its opening weekend. The film also notched up record attendances at a number of cinemas, including The Wheel in Durban, Sterland in Pretoria and Southgate in Johannesburg.

Sarafina! was released to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the Soweto Uprising of June 16, 1976. This watershed event in South Africa’s history provided the inspiration for the film honours all the victims and heroes of the Uprising and celebrates their courage.

“We are thrilled that the re-release of Sarafina! has seen the film appear on the Top Ten List of films last weekend,” said producer, Anant Singh. “Audiences have been enchanted by the pulsating song and dance routines. However, more importantly, the film tells an important story of our times, of an event that changed the course of South Africa’s history. We are also delighted that the youth have embraced the film in large numbers,” added Singh.

Sarafina! was created by Mbongeni Ngema, directed by Darrell James Roodt and stars Leleti Khumalo, Mbongeni Ngema, John Kani, Robert Whitehead and Miriam Makeba with Oscar winner, Whoopi Goldberg. Sarafina! is produced by Anant Singh with Associate Producers Sanjeev Singh and Helena Spring. It is executive produced by Sudhir Pragjee.

Sarafina! is a Videovision Entertainment release through United International Pictures (South Africa) with the support of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).
