SIZWE BANZI IS DEAD (article first published : 2006-06-24)

Original Tony Award-winning internationally acclaimed actors John Kani and Winston Ntshona bring Fugard’s Sizwe Banzi is Dead back to life.

The South African theatre classic written by Athol Fugard, John Kani and Winston Ntshona and directed by Aubrey Sekhabi, will appear at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival from June 29 to July 1, thereafter to perform in the Western Cape and Gauteng.

“The only hope of this world standard production coming to KZN is the possibility of its being invited to the Hilton College Theatre from September19 to 23,” says festival director Sue Clarence. “The financial risk is great and it will be impossible to commit to this project without public feedback.

Sizwe Banzi Is Dead is arguably the most famous South African play ever written,” she continues. “It was included in a publication of the Best Ten Plays on Broadway and Masterpieces of the Twentieth Century. It was also rated 59th on the Royal National Theatre's most significant plays of the 20th century, equal to Murder In the Cathedral by TS Eliot. To see it performed by actors of the calibre of Kani and Ntshona will be a theatre experience of note, as well an educational opportunity of a lifetime.

“If we decide to go ahead with this project, tickets for school groups will cost R40. There will be one free teacher ticket per mini bus; two free teacher tickets per bus. Tickets to the public will be R60.’

Performances will be as follows: September 20, 22 and 23 at 19h00 and September 20 to 22 at 10h00 with a further performance on September 23 at 09h00. The performance running time is 90 minutes.

Schools interested in giving learners this opportunity or interested in making a normal booking, should contact the Hilton College Theatre immediately on 033 383 0126 or 082 882 9869 or email: clarence@icon.co.za or theatre@hiltoncollege.com

Urgent feedback is required to make this season. Closing date for responses is July 28.
