THE LAST MILE (article first published : 2000-07-19)

Having performed to critical acclaim at The Windybrow in Johannesburg, Jullian Seleke-Mokoto's laugh-a-minute comedy The Last Mile arrives at the BAT Centre next week for a five day run.

Written and directed by Seleke-Mokoto, the play deals with the lives of Frank and Johnson, reluctant residents of an old-age home. A generous drunk with a relatively sound attitude towards life, Johnson dubs himself “Mr Perfect”. Frank, however, is a self-styled Mr. Muscles. An embittered old man, he trusts no-one and has an exaggerated opinion of his own importance. Coming from opposite ends of the spectrum they philosophise about life in general and their experience in particular, their relationship providing for hilarious situations.

Jullian Seleke-Mokoto has been in theatre for 12 years. He graduated from community theatre institutions and established himself as a celebrated theatre practitioner. In 1985, he founded the successful Abangani Theatre group which has performed all over South Africa and other African countries and received rave reviews.

The cast includes Jullian Seleke-Mokoto, Daniel Montsho, and Jabu Ntsele. The show runs in BAT Hall from July 25 to 29 at 14h00 and 19h30. Tickets R15 (R10 block bookings and children) can be purchased at the BAT Centre. The Last Mile is made possible through funding from the National Arts Council.
