WINNIE THE POOH (article first published : 2006-06-8)

Durban is in for a heart-warming winter treat this July holiday, as a brand new, glossy production of A.A Milne’s Winnie The Pooh is staged at the Playhouse Opera Theatre by KickstArt in association with the Playhouse Company.

The children’s roles are two girls to alternate the role of Kanga’s naughty baby, Roo, and two boys to alternate the role of Christopher Robin. Stead made his professional debut playing Christopher Robin for NAPAC in 1982, and feels a real affinity with the material, and knows just what he is looking for from the young actors.

The other children will be playing the chorus roles of two rabbits, a squirrel and Alexander Beetle: Rabbit’s Friends and Relations.

Winnie the Pooh will be directed by Steven Stead and designed by Greg King. The talented children who get the roles will be working alongside some of Durban’s top professional talent. Rowan Bartlett plays Pooh, while Carol Trench is his anxiety-ridden friend, Piglet. Michael Gritten will play Tigger, Anthony Stonier Rabbit, Alison Cassels, Kanga, Peter Court as Eeyore and Wendy Watson will make her professional debut as Owl.

Winnie the Pooh runs from June 28 to July 16 in the Playhouse Opera with performances Tuesday to Saturday at 14h30 (Sunday at 15h00). There will be evening shows on Friday and Saturday at 18h00. Book at Computicket.
