D.O.F. (article first published : 2006-06-2)

Funnyman Aaron MacIlroy's latest stage comedy D.O.F. unleashes the popular entertainer's distinctive brand of satire on fertile new terrain. Directed by Steven Stead and presented at the Catalina Theatre on Durban's Wilson's Wharf, D.O.F. casts a whole new perspective on the Department of Forensics - taking in the sharp (and not-so-sharp) devices of the criminal mind.

McIlroy's new one-man show takes the form of a lecture demonstration which coincides with the opening of Diep Kaak, a high-profile new prison. Our host is Joel Liebenberg, Chief Forensics Officer at D.O.F. (The Department of Forensics).

"Nothing defines humans better than their willingness to do seemingly irrational things in pursuit of phenomenally unlikely pay-offs," says Joel. "This is illustrated by the likes of lotteries, religion and, in my experience, dating."

Taking part in Joel's lec dem, and only too willing to share the limelight, are several inmates who've taken up residence in Diep Kaak (they've all been caught by Joel). These shady characters include Dr Norman Lectum, self-proclaimed artist, psychologist and alternative lifestyle guru; local politician Connie Naaiman; Pepe "Grande" Gonzales, a vertically-challenged Hispanic drug mule; reformed gangsterShambok Sithole, and the ubiquitous Veejay who declares he's the only innocent person in Diep Kaak.

Cover songs featured in the show include hits by Super Tramp, Monty Python, Enrique Iglesias, Black Eyed Peas, Robbie Williams, Shaggy and Lou Read.

Macbob Production's D.O.F. plays the Catalina from June 1 to 25. Performances Tuesdays to Saturdays at 20h00 (Sundays at 18h00). Tickets R70. Bookings on 031 305 6889.
