ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT (article first published : 2006-05-29)

The next production from the Highway Intimate Theatre Society (HiTS) is titled On The Edge Of Your Seat and promises a "witches brew" of suspense and drama.

The evening’s entertainment will be made up of three one-act plays, each one entirely different, yet all with an element of surprise and a twist in the tale.

Shadows Are Quietly Waiting directed by Pauline Staff takes place in a lonely farmhouse on the moors. Two ladies are at home, the men have gone out. A patient breaks out of the local lunatic asylum. A man arrives at the farmhouse claiming to be a doctor from the asylum - but is he one? The "doctor" leaves the farmhouse and then someone else arrives! Meanwhile, Mary's 15 year-old daughter is on her way home from school - alone.

The Sky is Overcast directed by Clare Hoogervorst is set in the kitchen/parlour of a French farmhouse during WWII. The family is part of the French Resistance which helps British airmen to escape back to England. A British airman arrives, seeking help. The local Gestapo turns up, as well as one of the leaders of the local Resistance who informs the family of a cunning German plan to find the network that helps airman to escape. However, all is not quite what it seems.

The Canary Cage marks the directorial debut for HiTS of Toni Quaradeghini. The play is set in the basement of a house where two women and a man are trapped, unable to get out. The relationships and links and the eventual madness and horror make for gripping theatre.

In a departure from HiTS normal performance periods, On The Edge Of Your Seat will have a solid run of four days from June 8 to 11 in the Pinetown Library. Supper is served at 19h30 with the show at 20h00 (June 11 supper at 18h30 with the show at 19h00). Tickets R60 pp for supper and the show (R25 show only).

Booking through Clare on 031 767 0244, or Edna on 082 774 2608 or 031 705 1937 to organise your table and tickets.

Parking will be at the Value Lodge car park, which will have the gates closed from 20h00 until after the show.
