TWELFTH NIGHT (article first published : 2006-05-9)

Enjoy a crisp autumn evening under the stars in the company of Shakespeare’s delicious comedy about mistaken identities, glorious wit, delicious disguises, decadent mischievousness, music and hedonistic love.

The Drama and Performance Studies programme at the University of KwaZulu Natal, Durban will present the sixth annual FNB Shakespeare Festival with a production of Twelfth Night (or What You Will) which will be staged in the Pieter Scholtz Open Air Theatre on the UKZN campus.

This follows the enormously successful productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2001); The Comedy of Errors (2002), Much Ado About Nothing (2003); Romeo and Juliet (2004) and last year a reprise of one of Shakespeare’s best-loved comedies – A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

In the tradition of the previous highly successful Shakespeare’s, Twelfth Night aims to foster an appreciation of Shakespeare as an accessible and ‘living’ playwright, particularly for younger learners. The Drama and Performance Studies programme is committed to the creation of a production of this hugely popular play that will be equally exciting, accessible and vibrant, and will delight and entertain all members of the audience.

This year, Tamar Meskin (who has co-directed all of the previous Shakespeare Festivals) is joined by educational drama expert and theatre practitioner Tanya van der Walt in directing a Twelfth Night set in the swinging 1960s, full of colour, sound and vibrancy. The production is designed by Rogers Ganesan and features a cast of more than 40 young and exciting performers in the wonderful character roles of what is one of Shakespeare’s most enduring and best-loved comedies.

Twelfth Night runs from May 18 to 27 nightly at18h00 in the Pieter Scholtz Open Air Theatre. Tickets R20 (R10 students, scholars, pensioners and block bookings over 10). Teachers bringing scholars are admitted free.
