DEATH OF STRINI MOODLEY (article first published : 2006-05-2)

Strini Moodley, Durban playwright and former black consciousness activist and journalist, died after a short illness in his home town on April 27. He was aged 59.

After matriculating from Sastri College, he achieved a BA degree at the University College for Indians, Salisbury Island, which went on to become the University of Durban-Westville. He was instrumental in writing Black on White which was one of the first political satires. He wrote several critically-acclaimed plays including his controversial adaptation of Antigone.

He served a five-year sentence on Robben Island for contravening Section 6 of the Terrorism Act in 1974. After his release, he worked as a freelance journalist for Graphic, a Durban weekly newspaper, and was a former deputy news editor of the Natal Witness in Pietermaritzburg.
