CHALO CINEMA 2 (article first published : 2006-04-25; last edited : 2008-09-7)

Following last year’s sold out season of Chalo Cinema, the Playhouse is back with Chalo Cinema 2. This fresh new look at the glamour and glitz of Bollywood dance extravaganzas that is set to have the town talking.

Presented by the Playhouse Company, directed by Smeetha Maharaj and choreographed by Vaibhav Joshi, the production features spectacular big stage renditions of hit songs from the latest Bollywood movies including Bunty Aur Bubbli; Neal and Nikki; Bluffmaster; Tom, Dick and Harry among others.

Scripted as a Bollywood awards ceremony, set at the Playhouse in Durban, Chalo Cinema 2 presents the latest in Bollywood showstoppers alongside golden moments from cornerstone films such as Sholay and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai – and a ‘lifetime achievement award’ to legendary movie showman, Raj Kapur.

The production is presented as a lavish Bollywood extravaganza with large groups of dancers from the Nateshwar Dance Company with guest artists onstage, interlaced with comedy. The cast of 55 includes leading dancers Kajal Bagwandeen, Deepa Jagivan, Aakashna Deokumar, Vaibhav Joshi, Ebrahim Medell, Quinton Ribbonaar and Siyanda Duma, as well as popular actors Afzal Kahn and Jailoshini Naidoo.

With set design by Rakesh Maharaj and Irek Karamon, costumes imported from India and designed by Draupadi Singh and lighting by Richard Parker, Chalo Cinema 2 is a feast for the senses.

The premiere performance is on May 9 at 19h30. More information from Mala on 031 369 9456.
