TALKING HEADS (article first published : 2000-07-14)

A truly delightful evening of classic wit, pathos, charm and comedy will be offered at the Hexagon Theatre Studio this week when multi-award winning Greig Coetzee teams up with family friend and 70-something year-old Pietermaritzburg actress, Vera Clare. The latter has been coaxed out of her retirement to perform with Greig in a double-bill of two monologues from the internationally-acclaimed British series Talking Heads.

Alan Bennett is one of those rare talents whose writing is so near to perfection that it is virtually indestructible. He represents the British generation of British actors and writers specialising in comedy who emerged in the 60ís along with Peter Cook, Dudley Moore and the Monty Python team. Talking Heads is one of his most successful works having been performed on the West End as well as on BBC Radio as a radio drama and on BBC TV as a hugely successful television series. In fact, it has been so successful that every bookstore in London and even Heathrow Airport has, for years, stocked audio and video tapes of the series to be snapped up regularly by locals and tourists alike.

The strength of Talking Heads

Talking Heads runs at the Hexagon Theatre on the University of Natal Pietermaritzburg campus on July 13, 14 at 19h30 and on July 15 at 14h30 and 19h30. Tickets R20 (R15 scholars and pensioners with appropriate ID) from the Hexagon. To book or for more information call (033) 260-5537.
