DURBAN POISON COMEDY ROADSHOW (article first published : 2006-04-9)

Making an eagerly-anticipated return to Durban -Durban Poison Comedy Roadshow - Schedule Four, aka seasoned Durban comedy old-boys John Vlismas and Alyn Adams with Durban Poison newcomer Martin Jonas - are coming to Durban for one night only in April.

The Durban Poison Comedy Roadshow is back after almost eight years, and comedy fans can expect another explosive mixture of laughs from three of the hottest stand-ups in the country. The show drew a countrywide following in the late 90’s, and although the line-up is a little different, the revamped version is sure to deliver the same up-to-the-minute hilarity to discerning comedophiles.

Seldom-seen footage of Durban Poison founder and comedy pioneer Shaun Griggs will be included in the show – with a percentage of money raised from the evening going towards Shaun’s son – Simon.

John Vlismas’s non-stop, no-holds-barred stream of consciousness is the perfect counterpoint to Martin Jonas’s laid-back raconteur and Alyn Adams’s blend of wit and whimsy; seen back-to-back in one show, they promise an evening that’s unique, clever and dangerously funny.

The Durban Poison Comedy Roadshow kicked off in 1996 when John Vlismas, Shaun Griggs and Patrick Kenny distilled the edgy zeitgeist of Durban’s burgeoning stand-up scene, and used a riotous hometown debut to fund a very successful raid on the Grahamstown Festival.

A year later, Shaun was managing Johannesburg’s first dedicated comedy club Hysterix and John was also an immigrant Jo’burger, cutting a meteoric swathe through stage and television comedy. They co-opted Alyn Adams, another Durbanite expat, and launched Durban Poison Schedule Two. The second tour was a hit with the trio’s growing fan base in Durban, Grahamstown and Jo’burg, which led to Durban Poison Schedule Three in 1998, when the Hilton Festival added to the circuit.

Sadly, Shaun Griggs succumbed to cancer in 1999, and further Durban Poison shows were shelved while John and Alyn took on other projects. However, down-to-earth Jo’burg stand-up stalwart Martin Jonas proved a Durban Poison natural, so the trio has been re-formed for Durban Poison Schedule Four .

Durban Poison Comedy Roadshow - Schedule Four takes place at 20h00 on April 22 in the Playhouse Opera.

Tickets range from R60 to R85 and can be bought through the Playhouse box-office or their Dial-A-Seat on 031 3699 444 or through Computicket nationwide.

The show is made possible by sponsorship partner Jagermeister.
