DIRECTORS OF THE FUTURE (article first published : 2006-04-6)

The latest show staged by the aspirant young performers in the Catalina Youth Mentorship programme is Directors of the Future which opens at the Catalina Theatre in Wilsonís Wharf for a short season from April 4 to 9.

The Catalina Youth Mentorship programme has been mentoring young talent successfully for the last three years. January 2004 the programme staged their new work Wherz it @ which had a short run at the Catalina. This was followed by the ever-popular Dahlings which was the culmination of the theatre for young people training module. Last year the group did an original work called Rush in Roulette.

The Catalina Theatre Mentorship programme runs 16-week modules, training and exposing the youth of Durban in all aspects of the performing arts as part of the ongoing development programme of The Catalina Theatre. Potential candidates are auditioned before commencing a 16-week training module culminating in a production.

The last module graciously funded by the Royal Netherlands Embassy was specifically a directing module and the outcome is this project which features the ten or so young theatre-makers in a programme comprising of a half a dozen stand-alone vignettes which have all been conceived, written and (most importantly) directed by the young people themselves in a project co-ordinated by Lulu Davies and Kim Muirhead.

The young performers also learned basic lighting and stage craft skills which they are practicing in this piece.

Tickets R25 (R15 concessions) booked on 031 305 6889. Directors of the Future has performances from April 4 to 9, Tuesday to Saturday at 19h00 (Sundays at 18h00 Ė no show Mondays) at Catalina Theatre: Wilsonís Wharf.
