ROMEO & JULIET (article first published : 2006-04-3)

Eager Artists Theatre Company will present the world’s ever-popular love story Romeo and Juliet, a powerful stage production told through drama and music.

The play is aimed at KZN grade 12 learners in the English second language schools. Adapted and directed by Durban playwright and director Jerry Pooe, Romeo & Juliet will be performed in four KZN regions, starting in Durban at the BAT Centre in April, followed by performances in Pietermaritzburg at the Winston Churchill Theatre and in Zululand at the University of Zululand’s Centre for Arts and Culture. Performances (venue tbc) will also be held in Newcastle.

Romeo and Juliet is William Shakespeare’s famous powerful love story between the daughter and the son of two rival families, the Capulets and the Montagues. The power of love triumphs over the power of hate. The bitterness of the old causes tragedy in the love of the young. Romeo and Juliet decide to die rather than losing each other. The death of the two lovers opens the eyes of the two families, making them realise the need for peace.

A strong, vibrant cast of 20 actors will be headed by Victor Ndawo as Romeo and Lyn Mbatha as Juliet.

Romeo and Juliet runs at the BAT Centre from April 20 to May 5. There will be two performances daily Monday to Friday at 10h00 and 13h00.

Tickets R15 per learner. More information and bookings through Andile on 031 305 1624 or contact 083 5111 407.
