BOBBERT UNCUT (article first published : 2006-03-13)

Hot news if you love a good laugh. Popular stage star Lisa Bobbert (Brutal Tunes, Defending the Planet) is set to unleash her lethal comedic skills on Durban audiences once more. Macbob Productions in association with the Playhouse Company proudly presents Bobbert Uncut in the Playhouse Loft.

Lisa’s sizzling solo spot stage show reunites the actress with director Caroline Smart, Durban’s veteran mistress of comedy. Their sensational collaboration for Brutal Tunes two or three years ago spawned a smash hit.

So if you’re new to the experience, be warned and beware. Bobbert’s a hazard to audiences with tender abs. She may have you aching on all fours in the aisles. In any event, prepare to meet Lisa in kaleidoscopic mode, “shown up” by a gallery of alter-egos and others whose lives have crossed paths with hers over the years. Retro-perspectives of the entertainer’s personal track record date back to her Rosebank Convent schooldays in the 80’s.

Stand by, for starters, for an unfortunate encounter in a pub, as hard-nosed (“Alcohol leads to vahlence”) Chantal dishes out a klap or two to those big-ass, big hair Sandton chicks, Lisa and her mate, for checking out her cool dude boy friend, Rat…

As Bobbert mercilessly turns the mirror on herself, and hands it from one “presenter” to the next, we get a succession of sharply-drawn portraits, sketched by all-too-transparent narrators, starting with Lisa’s life-long ‘best-friend’, Charmaine – well known for her appearances in shows Lisa has performed with her equally well-known husband, Aaron McIlroy.

True to comedy at its richest, Bobbert Uncut suggests that life’s more than just a giggle. Punctuating the show’s devastating script, a couple of scenes are tinged with bittersweet undertones and then some. Also, there’s a sometimes-whacky, sometimes-telling selection of favourite songs (Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, Brass in Pocket, Pata Pata, Don’t Stop Me Now, Absolutely Everybody).

Bobbert Uncut runs in the Playhouse Loft from March 29 to April 15.Early booking is advised for this Durban premier season. Bookings through Computicket on 082 915 8000 or ring Playhouse Dial-A-Seat on 031 369 9596 or 031 369 9540 (office hours). Online booking is at www.computicket.com
