ANTONY & CLEOPATRA (article first published : 2006-03-13)

William Shakespeare’s Antony & Cleopatra will be presented at The Theatre, St Anne's College from March 20 to 23.

Alexander Pope described humankind as "the glory, jest and riddle of the world". Nowhere in Shakespeare is this more powerfully apparent than in Antony & Cleopatra. It is a play that defies easy, settled judgements as the audience finds itself alternately bewitched and exasperated by the two lovers, whose "immortal longings" are realised only in death.

Acts of double-dealing, betrayal and folly are nevertheless couched in some of the most thrilling verse in English. Directed by George Niven and performed by the girls of St Anne's College, Antony & Cleopatra has been substantially cut and given a modern setting to render it more accessible to school audiences, and to provide a fresh perspective on this 2006 Matric set book.

Performances take place at 19h00 from March 20 to 23. Tickets R25 and bookings at St Anne’s College Reception through Toni Woodgate on 033 343 3300.
