BLACK COMEDY (article first published : 2006-03-6)

The third year students of the Department of Drama Studies at Durban Institute of Technology are staging Black Comedy, Peter Shaffer's magnificent farce about reversing light and dark directed by Allen Auld at the Courtyard Theatre on the DIT campus on the Berea.

Written in the mid 60's, the story of Black Comedy is set in an artist's loft during a power blackout. When the characters are in the dark, the stage lights come up so the audience can magically see them anyway. During scenes that take place when the power is on, the stage is completely dark, reversing the pattern. Truth is revealed in the dark - as well as a fair amount of tomfoolery, innuendo and farcical complications.

Prolific English playwright and author Peter Shaffer is responsible for some profound and significant plays such as Amadeus; The Private Ear and The Public Eye; The Royal Hunt of the Sun; Equus and Lettice and Lovage.

Black Comedy runs in The Courtyard Theatre, Mansfield Road, from March 11 to 18 (excluding Sunday) with performances at 19h00.

Tickets R30 (R15 students and pensioners with cards). Book on 031 204 2532 or 031 204 2194 or tickets are available at the door.
