BENEFIT CONCERT (article first published : 2006-02-28)

The Performing Artists Injury Network (PAIN) is staging a glitzy benefit concert on March 6 at 19h00 in the Playhouse to assist with the medical bills of two of Durban’s leading performing arts luminaries both of whom were hospitalised over the festive season. Garth Anderson has lost a leg through diabetes and Darren King sustained major neck injuries in a swimming accident.

The Playhouse has generously agreed to make the Drama Theatre available and the cream of the performing arts industry will be on stage to support Garth and Darren. Top comedians Mark Banks and John Vlismas are flying in from Johannesburg to appear.

Garth Anderson with his Actor’s Co-Op has been producing, directing and performing in and around Durban for more than two decades. He is one of the backbones of the KZN theatre industry and one of the most highly regarded theatrical all-rounders. Among the many legacies he has contributed to Durban, Garth is responsible for the annual Shakespeare production which is of particular interest to high school learners. This year – in conjunction with the Playhouse Company – he is staging King Lear which is directed by Clare Mortimer.

Darren King is well-known to all supporters of the Kwasuka theatre being regularly cast in the excellent KickstArt productions. Most notably in recent years, he has been in the smash-hit drama Laughing Wild and the high-energy comedy, Table Manners. One of the roles he is best known for is the delicious panto Dame in the annual family pantomimes – he was in Cinderella and most recently in Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.

Appropriately – one of the first performers to confirm his support of the benefit concert is Anthony Stonier who was the first beneficiary of PAIN after he broke his back in September 2001. Key figures in the Durban arts community are all getting involved in the evening. The anticipated line-up includes the likes of Lisa Bobbert; John van de Ruit; Vera Clare and Alison Cassels; Karen Van Pletsen; Rowan Bartlett; Dean Roberts; Bryan Hiles; Clare Mortimer; Neil Coppen; Carol Trench and Evan Roberts; Greg King; Steven Stead; Peter Court; David Gouldie and Mark Hawkins. Also appearing will be the cast of King Lear.

Audiences are urged to take a full purse to the theatre as there are wonderful prizes up for grabs in the benefit raffle – the first being a fully-inclusive weekend valued at approximately R17,000 for one lucky couple at the five-star luxury lodge, the Thanda Private Game Reserve, 23km north of Hluhluwe in the heart of Zululand.

PAIN is a network of interested parties who arrange benevolent concerts to assist professional KZN-based performing arts practitioners in dire need – through injury or disability which prevents them from work. PAIN attempts to cover essential bills and to provide emergency short-term financial assistance necessitated by an accident.

The PAIN Benefit Concert for Garth Anderson and Darren King takes place in the Playhouse Drama on March 6 at 19h00. Dress code is “Theatrical” – so take out sparkly jewels, feather boas and elegant DJ’s to look glamorous and support a great cause!

Tickets are a mere R100 each through Computicket which has graciously waived all their charges.
