THE HUNGRY (article first published : 2006-02-19)

March sees the first of the Playhouse Company’s 2006 two-production seasons of New Stages, representing cutting edge theatre from the New South Africa.

The season opens in the Loft with The Hungry running from March 10 to 12 at 19h30. Created and performed by Bheki Mkhwane and Ellis Pearson and featuring jazz maestro, Ndikho Xaba, it is produced by Sue Clarence Promotions.

A circle is drawn. People are gathering. Three magic men are present. Something is going to happen … there are glances … sounds … the energy is increasing. Slowly, a world is conjured up, the world of Sinako village. A Stranger appears. Why has Mr Pumpkin Man invited him? The Great Prophet is angry. Nxaloti, the quiet one, goes mad. Ma Gumbi and her friend, Florence, betray the village. Things will never be the same again.

“We are creative artists who are driven by the need to explore powerful issues. In The Hungry we look at the relationship between Africa and the West. Colonisation. Many people feel that the West is the saviour of Africa. Western civilisation arrived and brought with it its religions, its political systems and its technology. It took away Africa’s people, culture, raw materials and spirit. Is the West saving Africa, or, in the end, could Africa heal the West?” – Ellis & Bheki, January 2006.

Don’t miss this extraordinary production packed with history and told with humour and passion.

Tickets R20 available at Computicket. Further information from Mala Govender on 031 369 9456.
