NOT GUILTY (article first published : 2006-02-5)

Abangani and Mthakathi Theatre Groups from Johannesburg will present a drama production entitled Not Guilty for Umlazi Township Schools to run at Umlazi Cinema for a short four-day season from February 21 to 24 at 12h00.

Not Guilty focuses on the lives and plight of thousands of South Africaís freedom fighters. It takes a close look at facts and the daily challenges they are faced with. After risking their lives by joining military wings and banned organisations, members of The African National Congressís (ANC), uMkhonto Wesizwe (MK) and PACS Azanian Peopleís Liberation army (APLA) find themselves roaming the streets of South Africa, unemployed and without hope for the future.

This is a groundbreaking; powerful and well-directed work about Umkhonto Wesizwe cadres going through hardship, challenges in fighting apartheid forces. When they return to South Africa after Nelson Mandela was released they find their services are no longer essential.

Not Guilty looks at their time in the bush, dreaming of walking the South African streets as free men and women, each one holding a vision of a high-profile position in the new South Africa. The play looks at the frustrations of former Umkhonto Wesizwe members now being left out of the National Defence Force, resorting to robbing banks in order to feed themselves and their families.

Performed by five actors based in Gauteng Province, Not Guilty marks another creative success from multi-talented award winning Johannesburg-based actor, playwright and director, Thapelo Motloung.

The show is geared for grade 11 and 12 learners from Umlazi Township schools. It is aimed at fundraising for schools doing Arts & Culture in Umlazi District and for those wishing to raise funds for their Matric Dance.
