LEND ME A TENOR (article first published : 2006-02-2)

The Highway Intimate Theatre (formerly the Pinetown Reps), is celebrating 45 years of theatre in Pinetown with its 46th birthday taking place in July.

“With all the musicals that are on in the Durban area, especially at the professional theatre level, we are proud to be one of the only groups to be putting on plays that include farces, comedies and thrillers,” says Clare Hoogervorst. “So for a change of pace and a good laugh this time, come and see our next production.”

The show is Lend Me a Tenor and the storyline goes something like this: “When the fate of a charity concert (which has been sold out to a thousand customers and is to be followed by a party involving 50lbs of shrimp mayonnaise) is in jeopardy because the Italian tenor hired to sing the lead has fallen into a drunken stupor and is presumed dead, the impresario's docile assistant, with operatic ambitions, puts on the costume and wins acclaim as Otello.

“The tenor awakens, dons his spare costume, and thence follows a hilarious comedy of confusion in which the two Moors are absurdly confused by swooning females. Add a volatile Italian wife, an outrageous bellhop and a cynical impresario and you have a recipe to rival the classic farces.”

The cast includes Warren Gorringe, Toni Quaradeghini, Neville Tucker, Derek Griffin, Carol Ramsden, Kay Jodrell, Helen Osborne and David Campbell-Hall.

Lend Me A Tenorwill have performances on February 3 and 4 and the following weekend from February 9 to 11. Tickets R60 include supper (R25 with no supper). Gala night is on February 11 when there will be a three-course, buffet-type meal for R70 per person.

Booking through Clare on 031 767 0244, or Edna on 031 705 1937.
