THE FROG PRINCE (article first published : 2005-12-5)

The Catalina Theatre offers a “magnificent magical” children’s show – The Frog Prince - over the festive season and show tickets include a boat ride and festive goodie bag.

The Frog Prince has been adapted from the classic fairy tale and directed by Peter Court and is suitable for children of all ages. It features Julia Clarence, Dean Roberts, Marc Kay and Rowan Bartlett. Designed as a companion-piece for the “grown up panto”, Jack and his Big Stalk, which performs every evening in the same venue, The Frog Prince is strictly family fare and plays on the same set, using a similar cast to Jack.

The Frog Prince is a delightful play within a play told by three actors (and a stage manager) using puppets and masks with a sprinkling of audience participation as three street performers head off in search of an audience. Julia plays Tilda the youngest member of the group who is an inexperienced young actress desperate to act. Rowan plays Bombast and Dean is Gusto. They are the senior two performers in the troupe. They claim to have even (allegedly) performed to European royalty (although there is scant evidence to support this claim!).

Marc plays the hapless stage manager, Spot who finally gets his chance to perform in the show and goes onto play the Prince – which makes him rather happy as he is desperately in love with Tilda who plays the princess. All in all, a wonderful energetic imaginative story for all ages.

The 45-minute show runs without interval and there are performances daily at 11h00 (except Mondays) from December 6 to 24. Tickets R40 which includes a festive goodie bag and a boat ride. Bookings through Liesl or Janice on 031 305 6889. Block bookings discounts and charity fundraisers through Glenda on 031 305 7612.
