DEATH OF LYNDSAY MARITZ (article first published : 2005-10-15)

Lyndsay Maritz is a name largely unknown to theatregoers in KwaZulu-Natal, yet for more than 20 years she played a key role in the work of the Natal Performing Arts Council, shaping the images which many will remember from the striking posters she created.

Lyndsay, who died unexpectedly at her home in Westville on October 7, was resident graphic designer for the former Natal Performing Arts Council (now the Playhouse Company) from 1966. She created the posters for many hundreds of NAPAC productions of drama, ballet, opera and music, designed NAPAC’s programmes, the NAPAC News and two books with NAPAC’s PRO, Rob Cross.

She moved with NAPAC from The Alhambra to The Playhouse and worked on its inaugural seasons there, before retiring in the mid-eighties. She created its new logo (based on the fleche on the roof of The Playhouse).

Lyndsay also worked with Rob on a number of publications for the Wildlife Society, illustrating several of the Wildlife Handbook series – including the 1974 edition of A Field Guide to the Antelope of Southern Africa, written by noted conservationist Dr. Nolly Zaloumis and Rob Cross.

A few weeks ago, an entirely new and revised edition of the book – still using Lyndsay’s original illustrations, was published and Lyndsay was at the Musgrave Centre launch of the new book at Adams and Co.
