CRASHING THE NIGHT (article first published : 2000-05-29)

Paul Slabolepszy's hilarious new comedy Crashing the Night, which began a nationwide tour in Cape Town in April, is set to reach Durban on August 29 when it opens at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre.

The play is set in an adult entertainment club in a "dorp" somewhere in Mpumalanga and features an impressive cast. Two well-heeled WASP executives head for an annual company conference, one approaching the end of a stormy career (James Borthwick) and the other firmly ensconced at the top of the corporate ladder (Graham Hopkins). On the way they pay a casual visit to the club, opening up a veritable Pandora's Box of small town chicanery, skulduggery and intrigue. Other characters include a cool-as-a-cucumber drug dealer and nightclub owner (Sello Sebotsane), a gauche panel beater and local thug (Paul Slabolepszy) and a delectable dancer played (Camilla Waldman).

Crashing the Night, which is directed by Megan Wilson, examines ethics and morality in a society still attempting (perhaps misguidedly) to reconcile European mores with the African reality. It certainly will be one to watch as it gains momentum on its tour around the country.

There are facilities to buy shows at major discount rates to raise money for charities, clubs or organisations or at special corporate block booking rates. Contact (031) 202-9093 (office hours) or email pubmat@iafrica.com
