INCREDIBLE BEER SHOW (article first published : 2005-09-24)

Affable actor Gaetan Schmid brings his wacky Beer Show – subtitled the history of mankind as seen through a beer glass - to the Catalina Theatre in Wilson’s Wharf from October 5.

This highly-acclaimed irreverent nod to the history of the world through beer-making and swilling has taken all the festivals in South Africa by storm. Performed by Gaetan Schmid – a Belgian actor now settled in South Africa and married to well-known South African actress and director Lara Bye.

“The show is like an alternative history lesson and I talk about the history of mankind,” says Schmid, “So I start with the birth of civilisation in the Middle East with Iran/Iraq, the Egyptians and the Jews, then I have the Roman invasion and Empire then we work through the Middle Ages and the discovery of the Americas, the Industrial Revolution and the two World Wars, the rise of the multinationals and then finally beer in space.

“Beer has been an influence on all these major events of mankind sometimes in a big role, sometimes in a small role,” he adds “Did you know that settlers who founded the New World brought beer with them because beer was during the Middle Ages a very safe drink – better than water or milk!”

Beer Show runs from October 5 to 23. Tickets R60 (R50 pensioners and students). The show runs nightly except Monday at 20h00 (Sundays at 18h00). To book call Liesl or Janice on 031 305 6889. For block booking discounts and charity fundraisers call Glenda on 031 305 7612.
