MORON… THAN OFF (article first published : 2005-09-21)

After sold-out performances and standing ovations at the 2005 National Festival of the Arts in Grahamstown, Durban actor, playwright and producer Aldo Brincat brings his highly original Moron Than Off to Durban for nine performances only at the Catalina Theatre on Wilson’s Wharf.

Moron Than Off is a celebration of the True, Personal Clown. And by that I don’t mean red nose and big shoes. Clown work is a highly developed state of being and skill,” says Aldo. “Charlie Chaplin is still one of the greatest clowns in recorded history and this production is partly inspired by his legacy.”

In fact, Moron Than Off is a wacky combination of the talents of many silent movie clowns, such as Buster Keaton and Laurel & Hardy. But in Brincat’s usual style, it’s not enough to just recite old tunes, Aldo weaves a wonderful updated contemporary feel to the production, reminiscent of Mr. Bean, Fester Adams and Jack Ass. It is this highly original mix which saw the production receive invitations from all over the country and the world.

“I think this play obviously hits a nerve. People want to sit back and just laugh. I guarantee you will never forget this production- audiences will see in this hilarious production, things they have never seen before. You will understand what is the difference between film and theatre! In short, I am willing to bet, you won’t believe your eyes!” challenges Aldo.

In Aldo’s constant attempt to celebrate and cultivate Durban talent, he invited recent UCLA graduate Gabriel Sithole to direct the show. “I think Gabriel did a fine job and is set for the big time. He has an excellent eye for detail and is a highly creative mind”, says Aldo. Gabriel hails from KwaMashu and heads back to the US to complete his masters.

Moron Than Off is approximately an hour long and is suitable for the entire family over the age of seven. Performances daily at 10h00 from September 24 to October 2. Tickets R35 per person booked at the Catalina Theatre on 031 305 6889.
