KZN PUPPETRY FOR GRAHAMSTOWN (article first published : 2000-05-28)

Puppeteers Adi Paxton and Pamela Tancsik will be heading for the Standard Bank National Arts Festival to be held from June 30 to July 8 in Grahamstown.

Actress Adi Paxton is well known in Durban for her magic shows and her character Cherry the Clown is always a favourite with youngsters and adults alike. She will present Gobble and Cherry’s Magic Fun Show at the children’s festival on the Fringe. Both fun shows for all ages involve audience participation, magic and balloon modelling. Gobble describes what happens if you eat until you pop and the play involves two mice; a Gibbon monkey; a parrot; a nosy doctor and a wise rabbit who join forces to help Lucinda, a young girl who has food problems.

Currently touring with Hamlet and the Mosquito Coast for TIES Theatre Company in KZN, Adi recently became a full member of IBM (The International Brotherhood of Magicians). Her shows have been well received at festivals throughout SA, such as Grahamstown and the last Hermanus Whale Festival. Since 1986, she has been providing amusing entertainment for all ages – even for Madiba!

Pamela Tancsik started puppetry with the Munchner Marionettentheater in 1977 where she performed operas by Mozart, Wagner and Carl Orff with puppets. Later she joined the handpuppet theatre Kleines Theater im Pfortnerhaus. In 1999 and 2000 she joined SABC school TV on the Pezoolies. She directed University of Natal Durban music students in Lakme last September and is currently doing an Aids play for primary and secondary schools using shadow and hand puppets for McCord’s Hospital. She is also working on a Vuka:PSA advert on AIDS awareness.
