DEFENDING THE CAVEMAN (article first published : 2005-09-8)

The Caveman is back! Tim Plewman, returns to Durban for the last ever (he says!) season of the hysterically funny Defending the Caveman at the iZulu Theatre at Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom from September 27 to October 15.

At the time of writing, Tim had performed his 1387th performance of the show around the country, and was about to embark on a tour to Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Michaelhouse in Balgowan prior to coming to Sibaya.

This Pieter Toerien production is written by Rob Becker, directed by South Africa’s master of comedy, Rex Garner, and adapted by Tim to give it a “South African flavour”. The combination has resulted in a powerful and attention-grabbing solo performance of impeccable comedy timing.

Defending the Caveman was created by Rob Becker over a three-year period during which time he made an informal study of anthropology, prehistory, psychology, sociology and mythology, along with dramatic structure and playwriting. The result is a hilarious theatre experience of laughter and entertainment as the Caveman tackles the eternal, baffling and seemingly unfathomable differences between men and women.

And far from being an attack on the fairer sex, both sexes are shown up with all their quirks and foibles! There is strong empathy to demonstrate that there may be real reasons for these inexplicable differences between men and women whose origins are hidden in the mystery of human evolution.

But while Tim may have performed a phenomenal number of performances of the show, he has still found time to pursue his other love of theatre. In the last year he wrote a play with Rex Garner – Breakfast with Dad - which toured Johannesburg and Cape Town for six months, and directed Fiona Ramsay in My Brilliant Divorce.

Defending the Caveman runs at the iZulu Theatre at Sibaya from September 27 to October 15 from Tuesdays to Saturdays at 20h00. Tickets R90 booked through Computicket or the Sibaya Box-Office on 031 580 5555.
