DEFENDING THE CAVEWOMAN (article first published : 2005-08-23)

For years South African audiences have enjoyed the inimitable and hugely hilarious Tim Plewman “defend the caveman” in theatres around South Africa.

In an uproarious female response to the mega-successful play women hit back with the equally entertaining Defending the Cavewoman which opens at the iZulu Theatre at Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom on August 30 for a two week run.

Written and directed by Emma Peirson and performed by Vanessa Frost, Defending the Cavewoman is a hilarious look at the never-ending battle of the sexes – but this time from the female perspective.

The story takes place on the eve of Vanessa’s wedding day and the audience is invited into her “cave” to share in her anxieties surrounding the man of her choice and her insecurities about being “his” woman.

In the marathon 90-minute performance Vanessa successfully skins many sacred cows – from tampons and sex toys to relationships, insecurity and PMS – this is a gloves-off punchy take on the hilarious differences that make us undeniably men and women.

This is a laugh-a-minute look at two very different creatures trying desperately to co-exist on the same planet.

Vanessa and Emma are both graduates from The South African School of Film, Television and Dramatic Art in Johannesburg. The idea was conceived when Vanessa was in her Honours year at the school and she wanted to do a show for her final-year project that would be a commercial hit, so she asked Emma to write and direct it.

They are now partners in Frosti Lemon Productions, specialising in anything from corporate and industrial theatre to events management, musicals and well made plays.

Emma’s latest ventures have included being co-writer of the soon to be seen new television comedy- 10% OFF! and is also director of the new hit comedy, The Cheap Show – both in which Vanessa also performs. Sex Therapy is the latest production by Frosti Lemon Productions.

The show runs from August 30 to September 10, Tuesdays to Saturdays at 20h00. Tickets R75 through Computicket or the Sibaya Box-Office on 031 580 5555.
