UBOM! FOR KZN (article first published : 2005-08-23)

Ubom!, the Eastern Cape Drama Company has created more than 15 original funky plays since 2003. This dynamic company fuses Rhodes graduates with community professionals and is primarily involved in creating excellent theatre for young people, and some of the thrilling theatre has focused on Shakespeare, poetry and setworks. Even more outstanding is the collaboration between Ubom! and scientists - showing the human stories behind the theories is a unique and entertaining strength of this company.

Rhodes Drama lecturer Heike Gehring directs the play and explains that Mina Nawe … between him and her is an “exploration of the sometimes violent relationships that exist between men and women in South Africa. By investigating a number of cases where women have been abused, we want to question the strange need some men have to overpower the women in their lives, regardless of the fact that these women are very often their loved ones.”

Through storytelling and physical theatre, issues around gender as experienced by many on a daily basis are explored and conveyed. The piece is an attempt to start a debate around the way male/female relationships are viewed in South Africa and to unpack certain stigmas and taboos that form part of gender discussions.

A collage of women’s stories, Mina Nawe forms part of Women’s Day celebrations, encouraging celebration and respect of one another, regardless of gender.

Over the past three years, Ubom! has presented Plunge, by Andrew Buckland in Cape Town, Muti Incorporated in Johannesburg and in Botswana, and has performed extensively throughout South Africa.

Ubom! goes on a rural tour in August and September and will present workshops and performances in schools and at community centres around the Eastern Cape. For one week this thrilling company will be in KZN from September 1 to 6, and will perform at St Anne’s and Felixton College as well as presenting community artists' workshops at the Stable Theatre in Durban on September 3.
