ART (article first published : 2005-08-16)

Opening at Kwasuka Theatre on August 19 is Art, described as a remarkable wise, witty and intelligent comedy which has touched a universal nerve. Written in French by Yasmina Reza and translated into English by Christopher Hampton (Dangerous Liaisons), Art is a witty, articulate and challenging three-hander contemporary comedy.

When the play opens, Serje has bought a modern painting for a huge some of money. That in itself is not too extreme an action but the fact is this painting is white. Pure white. No marking, no drawing, no paint. Nothing.

Mark hates it and cannot believe that a friend of his could possibly want such a work. Yvan attempts unsuccessfully to placate both sides. If your friendship is based on tacit mutual agreement what happens when one person does something completely different and unexpected? The question is: are you who you think you are? Or are you who your friends think you are?

Directed and designed by Greg King, the cast includes Michael Gritten, Darren King and Themi Venturas.

Shows alternate with Boston Marriage, also running at Kwasuka. Check performance dates before booking. Shows on Monday (normally a non-theatre night), Wednesday and Friday at 20h00 and Sunday at 18h00. The show runs until September 11. Booking is at Computicket.
