FULL CIRCLE (article first published : 2005-06-21)

KZNs Kobus Moolman will present his award-winning new play, Full Circle, with a stellar cast and top director on the Main of this years National Arts Festival in Grahamstown taking place from June 30 to July 9.

Full Circle was Jury Winner for Best Script at the PANSA Festival of Reading of New Writing 2004 and is presented by the National Arts Festival in association with the Performing Arts Network of South Africa, PANSA.

It is a hard-hitting play about power, identity and change. Set in 1994, a tumultuous year in the history of modern South Africa, the play combines elements of the thriller and of film noir in an iconoclastic display of ethnic nationalism and religious fundamentalism.

In 1856, Nongqawuse, the young Xhosa prophetess, persuaded her people to slaughter their cattle and destroy their crops with the promise that the sun would rise in the west and all the white settlers would disappear back into the ocean.

How come then that in 1994 a blind Afrikaner extremist called Meisie starts having the same visions?

On a drought-stricken smallholding, a family of right-wing extremists secretly plot to exact an eye for an eye from the enemy outside, while the secret enemy within tears away at their narrowing lives. What is truth for this trio of fundamentalists? And how much blood will need to be sacrificed before the real truth can emerge?

Directed by Charmaine Weir-Smith, the play stars Michael Richard as Oom, Anriette van Rooyen as Meisie, Hannes Brummer as Boetie and Samson Khumalo as the Inspector. The stage and lighting design is by Denis Hutchinson.

Full Circle is written and produced by Kobus Moolman - a poet and playwright, educator and editor, who currently teaches creative writing in the Department of English at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban. In 2003 he was a finalist in the BBC African Performance radio drama competition. His winning play was produced for the BBC World Service and in the same year, it was read at the Moscow Theatre Festival of New Writing.
