BLUEBEARD (article first published : 2005-06-15)

The University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg’s Drama Studies in association with Woza Theatre Company are to present an adaptation of the tale of Bluebeard, a production which they will take to the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown this year.

The tale of a serial wife murderer is woven using an eclectic mix of township theatre, brutal realism, grotesque mime, song, dance and story telling.

The play focuses on the plight of Bluebeard's final wife, the last of a stream of women each disappearing into nothingness. She is haunted by the house-ghosts of his past, who sing to her until finally she opens the door to the freezer and lets the dead escape.

His secret revealed, Bluebeard sharpens his knife for the kill, whilst she, spurred on by the stories of the dead, prepares to kill him instead.

Bluebeard is directed by Tamantha Hammerschlag with choreography by Paul Datlen. Musical direction is by John McGuiness. It features James Aitchison, Arifani Moyo, Veronica Baxter, Sbu Buthelezi, Xolani Mdluli, Omri Nene and Kay Tomlinson.

There will e performances at the Hexagon Theatre on June 23 and 24 at 18h30. Tickets R25 (R15 students and senior citizens) available at the door. More information from the Hexagon on 033 260 5537 or e-mail: hexagon@ukzn.ac.za or visit www.hexagon.unp.ac.za
