FRANK&STEIN (article first published : 2005-06-9)

Frank&Stein the monstrous hit show that developed a huge cult following in Durban in the 80s and 90s is set to make a spectacular return injecting audiences with manic laughing gas. Pure Doomsday farce, this spoof of the Frankenstein story, won numerous awards and thrilled audiences country wide.

The original production was hailed as a hit for its groundbreaking style incorporating the silent movie techniques, an outrageous silent movie piano score and the novel use of props such as the famous toothbrush moustache and the spoon for an eye patch. The amazingly success style has spawned many cheap imitations in Durban since. Now is your opportunity to see the original!!!!

The new production will be directed once more by Murray McGibbon and stars Anthony Stonier, who was in the original production, and the famous clowns of Green Mamba fame, Ben Voss and John van de Ruit. After its SA season there is a strong possibility that the production will move to New York.

A robust mixed bag of slapstick, silent movie visual gags, traditional mime and story telling in a delicious spoof of the famous monster legend. It is one of the strangest tales ever told. It deals with the two great mysteries of creation: life and death. It may thrill you - it may shock you - it may even horrify you!!

These three great performers will take all the theatrical conventions, playfully turn them upside down, give them a tortuous twist - or simply extend them to a point, most would believe, of no return. Outrageously amusing and relentlessly entertaining, they will give you a cast of several dozen characters, many of them easily certifiable in ordinary life but utterly, comically unassailable on stage.

Frank&Stein opens at the National Festival of the Arts in Grahamstown on June 30. The Durban season will be at the Kwasuka Theatre in Greyville from July 12. Booking is through Computicket. All enquiries to Sue on 082 882 9869.
