NEON ANTHEMS FLYING COMEDY SHOW (article first published : 2005-05-30)

“You will either love them… or love them more!!” says the publicity material for The Neon Anthems (aka Liam Magner and Jacobus van Heerden) who will make their official professional stage debut this June.

They will present their first full-length comedy, The Neon Anthems Flying Comedy Show at Catalina Theatre on Wilson’s Wharf from May 31.

The Neon Anthems promise to “shock the socks off of you and have you rolling around all at the same time”! This exciting, talented, energetic and quirky duo performed two intriguing snippets of their show at the two Kwasuka Theatre Benefit Galas recently much to the delight of the audience.

Liam Magner and Jacobus van Heerden have been compared to a Monty Python film crossed with the music of David Kramer. They have been performing together as The Neon Anthems for the last five years, starting in high school when they discovered their mutual passion for music and theatre. They were soon creating their own comic sketches and songs, which always confront the South African reality.

Their show takes the form of an absurd musical rampage through the strata of humanity and local and global surroundings. It tells the story of two boys who manage to attain a certain amount of attention through their unconventional style of comic performance. Just as their fame is beginning to grow, however, nuclear war breaks out and the world is plunged into darkness. After much soul-searching and the miraculous creation of a time device, the two boys embark on a journey through the fabric of time as they attempt to rescue the world from its current state of chaos.

The ridiculously funny stories told by Magner and van Heerden, come from a personal place. Their purpose is to express and dramatise the material which interests and matters to them without ever forgetting to take the mickey out of each other. They have made successful appearances at Splashy Fen and at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

The Neon Anthems Flying Comedy Show runs at Catalina Theatre from May 31 to June 19 with performances Tuesday to Saturday at 20h00 (Sundays at 18h00).

Tickets R60 (R50 concessions - students with student cards and OAPs). There are specials of Two-for- the-price-of-One from May 31 to June 5 and every Sunday and Tuesday thereafter. Bookings through Thandeka on 031 305 6889.
