A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM (article first published : 2005-05-8)

Enjoy a crisp autumn evening under the stars in the company of Shakespeare’s delicious comedy about mistaken identities, glorious wit, decadent mischievousness and hedonistic love. A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be staged in the Pieter Scholtz Open Air Theatre from May 17 to 28.

The Drama and Performance Studies programme at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, in association with First National Bank, will present the fifth annual FNB Shakespeare Festival. The Drama and Performance Studies programme and FNB are committed to the creation of a production of this hugely popular play that will be equally exciting, accessible and vibrant, and will delight and entertain all members of the audience.

Directors Mervyn McMurtry and Tamar Meskin have once again produced a vibrant and accessible interpretation of the play. It is a colourful and energetic response to the cast’s sense of magic, youthfulness, love, darkness, immortality, power and fun.

The design and feel of the production is a fanciful marriage of the naivety of a children’s playground, the magic of a carnival and the darkness of The Matrix. The setting and interpretation is completely contemporary but the language and characters remains faithful to Shakespeare’s original script. The cast of 44 features the full spectrum of the Drama Department – from first years to MA students.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be presented at the Pieter Scholtz Open Air Theatre (University of Kwa Zulu Natal, Durban) nightly at 18h00 from May 17 to 28. Tickets R20 (R10 scholars and students), with concessions for block bookings of more than 10.

For bookings or further information, contact Claudette Wagner on 031 260 3134 between 09h00 and 13h00, weekdays. Bookings can also be made via email to wagnerc1@nu.ac.za or fax 031 260 1410.
