SANCTA ONE ACT PLAY FESTIVAL 2005 (article first published : 2005-05-2)

All new and existing amateur drama groups, under the banner of "Community Theatre" are invited to join in the fun at the Annual SANCTA One Act Play Festival to be held this year at the University of the Witwatersrand (The Downstairs Theatre) from August 8 to 27. This competitive event is entering its 26th year and an even larger number of entrants is anticipated.

SANCTA is a non racial organisation offering opportunities to old and new societies throughout South Africa to display their talents, in drama, comedy, farce, musical, and dance. The only stipulation in song and dance is that the production must have a storyline throughout. All South African recognised languages are welcome. The last evening will be the awards ceremony.

The theme for 2005 is “Come along and show us what you can do." SANCTA annual membership is R100 per Society and Festival fees are R700 per entry (R550 for members). Only fully paid SANCTA members may be eligible for sponsorship in 2005.

Entry automatically qualifies groups for the annual SANCTA Community Awards and eligibility for the Naledi Awards in 2006.

A copy of the SANCTA Constitution and also Festival Rules is available on request from entrants; but can be viewed at www.sancta.org.za

All Societies wishing to enter the SANCTA Full Length Play Festival (2005) should notify the organisers shortly before their production takes place and two SANCTA adjudicators will be designated to attend one of the performances. Their written evaluation (covering all categories) will be sent to the Society as soon after the event as possible.

This evaluation will automatically be entered into the Full Length Play Festival, and choices revealed at the Festival Awards Ceremony held at the beginning of 2006.

”We are also looking for a full length play to be performed in the middle of the festival at Wits,” says Noel Mc Donald, SANCTA’s PR.
