ARTSCAPE INVITATION (article first published : 2000-05-7)

For the last 22 years, Artscape (and its predecessor CAPAB) have hosted end-of-year productions of one of William Shakespeare's plays at the Maynardville Open Air Theatre. These have always been extremely popular with the general public as well as schools, regardless of whether the plays have been setworks. To encourage originality and offer opportunities to new, younger directors, Artscape invite all interested directors to submit proposals for the Shakespeare production to take place at Maynardville in December 2000/January 2001.

Proposals for any Shakespearean play may be submitted except for those performed in the last five years i.e. Romeo and Juliet, As you Like It, Twelfth Night, The Tempest and Taming of the Shrew.

Proposals (no longer than three pages) should include the title of the play and a motivation for its selection as well as a concept outline and rationale which the director will use for interpretation and staging. Also included should be an indication of the potential size of the cast, proposed leads and a broad budget outline in addition to a detailed CV outlining the director's previous work as well as newspaper cuttings and other evidence of his or her track record. Visual material may be included at the director's discretion.

Proposals should be submitted by May 19 to The Arts Manager, Artscape, PO Box 4107, Cape Town, 8000 or delivered to the Nico Theatre, DF Malan Street, Cape Town. All proposals will be treated in the strictest confidence, and all applicants will be informed of the outcome in writing by July 15.
