MAYNARDVILLE SHAKESPEARE TURNS 50! (article first published : 2005-04-27)

The 50th anniversary of Shakespeare productions at the world-famous Maynardville Open-Air Theatre in the Cape will be celebrated early next year.

More than 50 years ago, two actresses - Cecilia Sonnenberg and René Ahrenson - together with Shakespeare production specialist Leslie French, realised the potential of this open-air space and with the support of the municipality, re-sloped the land and diverted the stream. The first production of the Taming of the Shrew took place in 1956.

This celebrated annual tradition is enjoyed by over 20,000 people each year who come to picnic on the lawns and experience Shakespeare-in-the-Park. Many learners and students have cut their wisdom teeth on Shakespeare at Maynardville. To celebrate this occasion in style, Artscape and the Maynardville Theatre Trust are inviting directors to submit proposals for the 2006 season.

The panel hopes to receive a variety of creative ideas that will enhance and fit the ambiance of this special setting and make this celebration the occasion of the 2006 summer.

Proposals for the panel's consideration should contain a detailed curriculum vitae and a production treatment of no longer than two pages. Visual material to support the proposal may be included at the director's discretion. The closing date for the submission of proposals is May 21, 2005.

Proposals can be sent to Brian Heydenrych, Artscape, P O Box 4107, Cape Town 8000 or e-mail badger@broadwave.co.za
