THE STAND-UP (article first published : 2005-03-7)

Alerting all lovers of laughter. Look for the return of mega-funnyman Aaron McIlroy in the premier season of his latest side-splitter, The Stand-Up presented by Macbob Productions, playing at the Catalina Theatre on Wilson’s Wharf from March 15 to April 10.

Aching abs and tears of mirth are forecast in this all-new one-man show, co-written and directed by Susan Monteregge, as the inimitable Aaron casts his laser-beam gaze on the why’s, wherefore’s and where-with-all’s that make up the fabric of stage comedy.

One South Africa’s most popular entertainers in this performance genre with a string of block busters under his belt (The Loser, Mr Personality, My Cousin Brother and, most recently, the award-winning Defending the Planet), Aaron is now set to put the whole comic genre under the microscope.

So stand by for some devastating test results as our expert surveys the scene with typical McIlroy head-on penetration. Taking on the works in full chameleon mode, he casts his beam over the spectrum of comics, and the impulses and aspirations that make them tick, from the amateur wanna-be to the fully-fledged MC, and those big-time Headliners in full strut.

Giving his victims – on both sides of the footlights – a break from time to time, his scrutiny also falls on the flipside of the laughter coin, observing some of those darker, behind-the-scene elements that drive the creative process of being funny.

Early booking is strongly advised.

Performances of The Stand-Up Tuesdays to Saturdays at 20h00 (Sundays at 20h00). Tickets R65 (Block booking discounts: R60 per ticket for groups of 20 or more/R55 per ticket for groups of 100 or more).

Book now 031 305 6889 or 082 335 6088.
